He’s facing Nicole Kidman, the villainous taxidermist. He’s beaten thespian and perpetual miser Phoenix Buchanan played by Hugh Grant. Now, in the highly awaited Paddington trilogy sequel from Dougal Wilson Paddington Our favorite voiced bear by Ben Whishaw is about to take on his worst enemy to date in Peru. Not the incredibly hot singing nun played by Olivia Colman, or the riverboat captain played by Antonio Banderas, but we’re keeping an eye on them both; what we’re talking about is a photo booth. Yes, you heard us correctly, people. Paddington helplessly tangles with a passport picture kiosk in the most recent trailer for the sequel to one of the best films ever made, to obviously really funny effect. Look it over for yourself:
Never change, Paddington, please! While it’s true that this clip emphasizes the “teaser” in “teaser trailer,” let’s face it—we weren’t quite ready for more jokes and whimsical adventures with the Browns and our favorite Peruvian bear, weren’t we? In addition, this brief scene provides a hearty assurance that, despite Paul King stepping down as Paddington’s director and Sally Hawkins replacing her with Emily Mortimer as Mrs. Brown, things will continue to go as charm-your-socks-off as usual for writers Mark Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont as well as new helmsman Wilson. And how many of us haven’t at least once neglected to remove the marmalade sandwich from our heads before snapping a passport photo? Ah? That’s right, it’s just the bear and me.
While we only catch a fleeting glimpse of the returning Brown family (as well as Julie Walters’ Mrs. Bird, of course!) in another scene, we do witness our homeward-bound bear becoming entangled in telephone wire on a Peruvian riverboat, indicating that the joke will still undoubtedly be funny a third time. The official synopsis is as follows: “Paddington carries Paddington’s tale to Peru when he goes back to see his cherished Aunt Lucy, who is currently a resident of the Home for Retired Bears. When a mystery forces the Brown Family to embark on an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the alpine peaks of Peru, a spectacular adventure unfolds.
Risk-taking? Verify. Sandwiches with marmalade? Verify. The prospect of a tearful reunion with Aunt Lucy, the beloved character from Paddington, that will leave us crying uncontrollably at CGI bears? That will also be checked. All of which is to say that it appears that a new film is in the running to be the greatest movie trilogy of all time. When Paddington in Peru opens in UK theaters on November 8, we’ll find out if it’s a sticky mess or as sweet as marmalade.
