It turns out that greater work and not so much prayer were needed. However, Deadpool & Wolverine, which has been dominating the box office since its release three weeks ago, has now crossed the $1 billion milestone, making it the second R-rated movie to accomplish so after Joker from 2019.
With $535.2 million from overseas markets and $494.3 million from domestic sales, the superhero buddy comedy has now earned $1,029.5 billion worldwide. By the end of the week, every projection states that it will surpass Joker’s $1.079 billion in revenue. And with the exception that Joker didn’t have a Chinese release to help it, the movie has arrived at that position more quickly than Todd Phillips’ feature.
After Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine is the second movie to reach the $1 billion milestone in 2024. Disney is enjoying a tremendously successful year, becoming the first studio to earn more than $3 billion this year with those two and its other movies.
Additionally, Ryan Reynolds’ real-life wife Blake Lively had success with her own major new film, making it a very successful weekend for the Reynolds/Lively family. The love drama It Ends With Us, which was adapted from Colleen Hoover’s best-selling book, debuted favorably both domestically and internationally, grossing $50 million in the US and $80 million worldwide in its opening weekend. With a budget of $25 million (before promotional expenses), that’s an incredible start that surpasses expectations.
