Although he has only been positively connected to eight killings, Rodney Alcala was a true serial killer who worked from 1968 to 1979; it is thought that he killed as many as 130 people. While on a murderous rampage in 1978, Alcala boldly went on The Dating Game, a famous game show, and won a date with Cheryl Bradshaw. She declined to go out with him after getting a bad feeling about him, albeit the movie seems to have altered that portion of the real story.
