It’s safe to say that Deadpool & Wolverine features a ton of cameo appearances—more Marvel characters from previous movies than you could shake a Peter at (steady). However, there are always those who managed to escape. Ryan Reynolds, who is also an actor and co-writer, claims that he was very close to persuading Nicolas Cage, or as his younger persona could say, Nic fuckiiiiiiing Cage, to put on his fiery leather jacket and skull ornament in order to reprise his role as Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze.
Reynolds acknowledged to Collider that it had at least reached the two actors who were debating the concept. Reynolds answers, “Yes,” and continues, “It definitely came to a conversation. Yes, but no.”
Naturally, Cage portrayed Blaze in the two Ghost Rider films made by Sony: the namesake film from 2007 under Mark Steven Johnson’s direction, and the raucous sequel from 2011 under Neveldine and Taylor’s direction, titled Spirit of Vengeance. Reynolds’ Wade Wilson must have had a great time playing the Rider with his flaming face and overall moodiness, but tragically, it was not to be. Perhaps if we see another major Deadpool movie, which is quite likely considering how close to $1 billion this one is doing at the box office.
Regarding other Deadpool & Wolverine cameo news, Channing Tatum is hoping that his appearance as Gambit on screen—in all his drawling French Cajun glory—won’t be a one-time thing. Tatum most obviously embraced the opportunity.
“I really hope so,” he said to Variety at the Blink Twice premiere. “From your lips to the ears of God. My friend, put it in writing. Please. Far from God, nevertheless, has he thought about having a conversation with the gods of Marvel Studios? Of course, I have stated that. For the past ten years, I’ve been saying I want it,” Tatum said. “Bob Iger and Kevin Feige are in charge of it. I ask God for help.” A little prayer will hopefully work a miracle from Marvel Jesus.
