Despicable Me 4 follows the narrative of reformed villain Gru (Steve Carrell) as he is hunted by angry former classmate Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell), with his family having to move to a safe house.
The movie gained an undesirable record upon its debut – obtaining one of the lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores of the series with 55% (now risen to 56%), lying behind Despicable Me 3’s 58%. It also matches the rating of the first Minions movie.
The last installment in the series was 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, and at the time of its release Carell acknowledged that he didn’t originally comprehend the Minions.
“When we created the first movie, I felt it came out terrific. I was so pleased with what the animators accomplished and what the authors had done, and they built this universe that was so unlike anything that I’d seen,” he said to Digital Spy.

“It was a bit darker, a little edgier, there was something different about it. Kids enjoyed it and they adored the Minions for sure. That was a stroke of brilliance. When they were originally explained to me, I couldn’t for the life of me comprehend what they were talking about.”
However, Carell claimed when he watched the movie “it absolutely made sense”, adding: “I think the fact that they’re all in good humor, there’s a compassion that underlying all of it and a decency and a love and a sweetness to it all, and they’re hilarious.
“I believe all of those things together, maybe that’s the alchemy, but it’s hard to tell. You never know when something is going to work and when it’s not.”
