Brand-new information straight from Pandora: the movie that was once dubbed Avatar 3 has a new title. During the three-hour presentation at Disney’s D23 Expo event in Anaheim, California, a panel with significant updates from the studio’s many brands was featured. James Cameron also made an appearance to share some updates from his Na’vi friends. Most significantly, it was disclosed that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be the official title of the 2022 sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water.
Although “Avatar: The Seed-Bearer” was the working title of the movie for a while, director James Cameron’s official title “The Way of Water” seems more fitting. From the D23 stage, Cameron hinted about the threequel, saying, “It’s got very high emotional stakes.” “More than in the past.” The director hinted at a new character that audiences would “love to hate” and promised more surprises for the Sully family. He emphasized, “The new film is not what you expect.” But it’s unquestionably what you desire. During the occasion, some preliminary concept art was displayed on stage.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to open in theaters around Christmas 2025, if all goes according to plan. Will it prove to be another box office titan worth billions of dollars or more? What sort of ash and fire are we in for? And what role does the powerful Tulkun Payakan play in all of this? In just over a year, we’ll find out.
